Villa Guardavalle
Villa Guardavalle and its pool in the evening light, seen from above

The grounds

I

Pines, olives and a pool

The house sits on its own rise, surrounded first by lawn and umbrella pines and then by woodland that belongs to it. Nothing overlooks you.

The pool is behind an oleander hedge a short walk from the pergola. In the evening the light comes across the hills from the coast, which is the moment everyone stops and looks up.

The pool from above, enclosed by hedges and olive trees
The iron pergola running along the front of the villa, table laid beneath it
Lunch laid for sixteen under the pergola, wine and flowers on the table
Garden armchairs and geraniums against the yellow wall of the villa
The estate from the air, the house half hidden in its own woodland
The wooded hills of Crespina rolling away towards the coast

The area

The Colline Pisane, the Bolgheri wine road, Volterra and the sea are all inside an hour.

Pisa airport is thirty-five minutes away, Florence about an hour and a quarter. The coast at Marina di Cecina is forty minutes, and Volterra an hour through the hills.

Come by car. Crespina Lorenzana has a shop and a couple of good places to eat, but the pleasure of this part of Tuscany is the driving — the Colline Pisane, the wine road down to Bolgheri, the empty back roads towards Volterra.
